RoHS Compliant Statement

This statement is to confirm that all materials manufactured by ABC, Inc. in Atlantis City, ST under the Gizmo trademarks are below the maximum allowable levels specified in the RoHS directive.

Though not finalized yet, there will be two routes to RoHS compliance - one systems-based, the other samples-based.

The RoHS Compliance 'A' route

is mostly geared towards large organizations producing a large range of products. It is more practical for these companies to have large sophisticated databases - not necessarily by product but by sub-assemblies and components. These companies would also have a quality management compliance system in place.

"Following this systems-based approach, as long as the quality management system is in place - for compliance approvals and risk assessment controls - that's enough," said Smith. "If these systems are not satisfactory, then we would go down the 'B' route to RoHS compliance."

RoHS Compliance - 'B' Route

More of a products-based approach, the 'B' route would be designed for the smaller firms producing a small range of products.

"Here we would rely more heavily on reviewing specific product data taken rather than the compliance system in place," explained Smith.

Manufacturers will need to ensure that their products - and the components and sub-assemblies of such products - comply with the regulations by the relevant date in order to be placed on the EU single market. The regulations will also have an impact on those who import EEE (Electrical and Electronic Equipment) into the European Union on a professional basis, those who export to other member states and those who re-brand other manufacturers' EEE as their own.

"So it's the manufacturer or importer that's accountable for the compliance status, not the people who handle the product through the supply chain," explained Smith.

"There is a hurdle to get over - from now until where we need to be [as an industry]," admitted Smith. "My job is to get behind the industry, so that in five years' time this'll be a job done."

"We're only at the beginning," he concluded, "but RoHS compliance will help the next generation of consumers lead a healthier life."
