RoHS Banned Substances

The RoHS directive restricts the use of six hazardous materials in the manufacture
of various types of electronic and electrical equipment.

RoHS Banned Substances

The RoHS Directive is simple – to restrict the use of six substances within electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), thereby contributing to the protection of human health and the environment. Below are the six RoHS Banned (restricted) substances.

Substance
Proposed Maximum
Concentration
Lead – Pb
0.1 %
Mercury - Hg
0.1 %
Cadmium - Cd
0.01%
Hexavalent Chromium Cr (VI)
0.1 %
Polybrominated biphenyls – PBB
0.1 %
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers - PBDE
0.1 %

Article 1 of Commision decision 2005/618/EC states:

'For the purposes of Article 5(1)(a), a maximum concentration value of 0.1% by weight in homogeneous materials for lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenals (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) and 0.01% by weight in homogeneous materials for cadmium shall be tolerated'

Note: The word "banned" is really incorrect since RoHS specifies the maximum concentration values of each restricted component.
